About the Conference

You are cordially invited to participate in the 23rd International Conference of the Commission on Word Formation of the International Committee of Slavists. The conference will take place at ZRC SAZU from September 17th to 20th, 2024, and it is jointly organized by ZRC SAZU and the Jožef Stefan Institute.

The theme of the conference—Multistage Word Formation—focuses on studies that extend the binary relationship between motivating and motivated words. This encompasses several words engaged in word-formation relations (e.g., to teach → teacher, teaching, teachable). These relations may involve multiple stages, with each word as the word-formation base of the next, thereby forming word-formation chains (e.g., to respond → to correspond → correspondence; hope → hopeful → hopefulness). The latter pattern is particularly typical of Slavic languages (e.g., in Slovenian: mladost ‘youth’ → mladosten ‘youthful’ → mladostnik ‘adolescent’ → mladostnikov ‘adolescent’s’), although we also welcome research on languages from other language groups at the conference.

The conference title does not strictly specify a methodological approach but instead emphasizes the material expansion of the vocabulary analyzed. Therefore, the conference aims to explore aspects of word families both synchronically and diachronically, and within various contexts, including:

  • Dialectology
  • Sociolinguistics
  • Language technologies
  • Second and foreign language research
  • Sign languages

  • There is NO registration fee for the conference.
  • The working languages of the conference are all Slavic languages and English.
  • The time limit for the presentation of the paper is 15 minutes.
  • The peer-reviewed papers will be published in a monograph after the conference.
  • Conference participants are responsible for booking and paying their own accommodation and travel expenses.
